Lanois: “Yellow for Kotarski, right for Lovren’s red and a foul for Samata” (vid)

Stefan Lanois analyzed phases from yesterday’s Cup match between AEK and PAOK, underlining among other things that Kotarski was correctly given a yellow and not a red in the penalty phase and that Lovren was correctly sent off.

The French head referee of KED, Stéphane Lanois analyzing phases from the AEK-PAOK of the quarter-finals of the Cup agreed with Sotsa’s decision to award a penalty and a yellow card to Kotarski, also adding that AEK’s goal was rightly disallowed after the penalty was taken and the PAOK goalkeeper made a save.

Also, in Lovren’s phase with Mandalo, he argued that the PAOK player was correctly sent off, but a foul should have been given in favor of PAOK and a yellow card should have been given to Rota for his marking on Samata.

In detail, the French referee commented the following:

For the penalty shootout won by AEK: “When a player commits a foul (here the goalkeeper) against an opponent inside his team’s penalty area and denies the opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity, the referee awards a penalty and the offender is shown a yellow card if his intention was to play the ball. We had this case here with the goalkeeper.”

For the penalty kick and the goal disallowed because Hadjisafi entered the area: “Before the penalty kick is taken, a teammate of the player taking it enters the penalty area and then scores. The VAR checked the incident and intervened to cancel the goal and restart the match with an indirect foul where the player who entered the box touched the ball.”

On Rota’s phase with Samata and the red to Lovren: “Here we have a case of a potential penalty with a red card for serious marking. The VAR checked the possible penalty, the holding that took place just outside the area and the serious marking. The VAR must call the referee to see the phase, show him the incidents he missed and restart the game with: 1. Red card for serious marking. 2. Foul in favor of the away team and a yellow card for holding.”
