Erik Pieters returns to English football at Luton Town. The 36-year-old defender has been without a club since leaving West Bromwich Albion in the summer. The club communicates that Pieters is signing a short-term contract.
On Thursday afternoon, Luton Town presented the Dutchman, who already trained with the club in the summer. Luton played in the Premier League last season but was also immediately relegated to the Championship, where the team is currently only five points above the relegation zone.
Pieters will initially mainly serve as a selection filler. “Given the situation we are in, we feel Erik can help us during this period,” club website manager Rob Edwards quotes. ‘Maybe not initially by making minutes, but by helping out during training. But if he gets a chance, it’s up to him to show it. He is a good boy, very experienced and he can bring balance to our defense with all the injuries we have.’
In his career, Pieters played for FC Utrecht, PSV, Stoke City, Amiens, Burnley and finally West Brom. In the past he played eighteen international matches for the Dutch national team. His last date was on September 4, 2014, when the Dutch team lost 2-0 to Italy.
