Brian Priske squeezed him in De Geusselt on Tuesday evening. The Feyenoord coach saw that his team was struggling in the cup match with MVV. Yet the Rotterdam team won, which means we can focus on PSV. It is not yet clear who will be under the bar.
“I pinched him a lot tonight,” Priske admitted to the ESPN cameras. The Dane saw that things almost went wrong in the final phase. ‘I don’t know why, but we give away goals all the time. That’s unnecessary. But credits to MVV. They brought a lot of energy and power and had great opportunities. The atmosphere here was great, a wonderful cup match. But we have to do our job.’
And that job was only done poorly, Priske thought. ‘Of course we had some changes in the line-up, but they also have to control it better. Of course we also had opportunities to close the match, but we had to do better. Although it is also comparing apples and oranges. Cup matches are different…’
“They had the magic, the opportunity in one evening,” Priske explained. That almost happened due to a shot by defender Facundo González. ‘We gave away a goal fifteen minutes before the end and then it became restless. We did that ourselves.’
Redmond and Bijlow excel
Zépiqueno Redmond ultimately turned out to be the savior of the evening. The eighteen-year-old striker scored both goals, to Priske’s satisfaction. ‘This is a great boy. Unbelievable. And so modest too. He works very hard and crowned all his work today with two great striker goals. Respect. He’s helping us tonight and I’m really happy for him.”
Justin Bijlow was also able to distinguish himself. The goalkeeper had to make a few saves, while Priske already left the door open for a starting spot in Sunday’s cracker against PSV. Afterwards, that door opened even further. ‘It has not yet been determined who will play. Bijlow is a great goalkeeper, I think. Tonight again. He saved us in the first half, but was there again in the second half. And in standard situations he stood his ground. Timon Wellenreuther was not always happy in the last matches, that is part of the job. We always have discussions about it, now also.’
