Almere City has fired Hedwiges Maduro. The club holds the 39-year-old coach responsible for the poor results this season. After sixteen rounds, Almere City is in last place in the Premier League based on goal difference.
Thus, after six months, Maduro’s first job as head coach has come to an end. The Almeerder native returned to the club in the summer, with which he had achieved the first promotion to the Premier League in club history as assistant coach to Alex Pastoor in 2023.
“Hedwiges is a child of the club and we consciously appointed him as head coach last summer,” the club said in a statement. “We wanted to give him as long as possible to grow with the team towards better performance. Unfortunately, that is still not visible.”
Almere City will be looking for a new head coach during the winter break. Assistant coaches Anoush Dastgir and Foeke Booy are in charge on Saturday during the last match before the interruption, a home match against SC Heerenveen.
Sixth defeat in a row
Last weekend’s 3-0 defeat at Ajax was the last time Maduro was in the dugout. It was the sixth defeat in a row for Almere City and the twelfth of this season.
The position of 18-time Dutch international Maduro had been under pressure for some time. Under Maduro, Almere City won only one game this season. At the end of October, NEC was defeated 1-0 at home. The team also played three draws. In the KNVB cup tournament, Almere was eliminated by amateur club Quick Boys.
Maduro is the second coach to be fired in the Premier League this season. Sparta Rotterdam previously released Jeroen Rijsdijk. He was succeeded by Maurice Steijn.
