Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior has been voted The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2024. The Brazilian succeeds Lionel Messi, who won the previous two editions. Vinícius Júnior’s victory follows a month and a half after the much-discussed presentation of the Ballon d’Or.
To the surprise of Real Madrid and Vinícius Júnior himself, the Golden Ball did not go to the Brazilian attacker at the end of October, but to Rodri from Manchester City. Real Madrid heard this news before the ceremony and decided not to travel to the gala.
Vinícius Júnior is the first Brazilian to be named Best FIFA Men’s Player, the predecessor of this award (for FIFA World Player of the Year) went to a Brazilian no fewer than eight times. Ronaldo (three times), Ronaldinho (twice), Kaká, Rivaldo and Romário won the award, which was last awarded in 2009. The votes for Best FIFA Men’s Player were cast by fans, national team captains, national team coaches and the media.
By winning the prize, which concerns the performance in the period from August 21, 2023 to August 10, 2024, Vinícius Júnior trumps several world stars.
