Captains and national coaches of the national teams affiliated with the World Football Association can vote every year for the FIFA award on who they think is the best player of the year. They are asked to provide a top three. Van Dijk put Vinicius first, Erling Haaland second and Rodri third.
Koeman thought Rodri, who recently received the Ballon d’Or, was the best. He put the Spaniard first, Vinicius second and Jude Bellingham third.
Media representatives may also submit a top three. Jaap de Groot did that on behalf of the Netherlands: his top three consisted of Rodri, Vinícius and Lionel Messi.
In addition to captains, national coaches and media people, supporters could also make their voices heard. Vinícius received the most points from the fans, the media and the captains; Rodri scored highest among national coaches. All in all, Vinícius’ lead over Rodri was quite large: 48 to 43 points. Bellingham came third in the election with 37 points on the final score.
