Brian Priske has explained his choice to give Timon Wellenreuther preference under the bar at Feyenoord for the time being. The German goalkeeper will start against Fortuna Sittard on Saturday, while Justin Bijlow will again take a seat on the bench. Priske cannot rely on Júlian Carranza against the Limburgers. The striker has been injured.
“We don’t know exactly how serious it is yet, but it doesn’t look good,” Priske told ESPN before the game. Carranza injured his calf in the Champions League against Manchester City. ‘He has to miss this match and probably the next one too. We’ll have to see next week if he’ll be out longer.’
Priske felt that against Fortuna he had no choice but to let Wellenreuther start again. ‘There are several elements to this choice. I’m not going to go into too much detail, but an important aspect is the dynamics of football. Sometimes as a player you have the momentum. I chose Justin earlier because he did well in training. The team was struggling, so I thought it was a good time to make a change. Unfortunately he got injured.’
“Now Timon has played three very good matches,” the trainer continued. ‘We won twice with him in charge and he did great against Manchester City. As a football player you also have to look at that. His reaction after being benched was also strong. All that together ensures that it now remains standing.’
