Since the beginning of autumn, we have been observing the suffering of Ukrainian clubs in the main round of Eurocups. But at least for a long time they avoided the old bitter traditional dish of Ukrainian football – conceding goals in the last minutes. However, it was not possible to complete the fall without such people. Yesterday, Shakhtar Donetsk conceded in the Champions League match against PSV in the 87th, 90th and 95th minutes, adding three more conceded goals to the nightmare statistics.
I must admit right away that I calculated these statistics manually and at night, so there may be small errors. But the overall picture will not change due to a difference of 2-3 goals. It should also be noted that I took into account the Champions Cup/League, Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Cup/Europa League, Conference League, UEFA Super Cup, but not the Intertoto Cup. And goals in extra time (overtime) were counted on the same principle as in regular time – after the 110th and after the 115th minute.
So, starting from the 1991/92 season, Shakhtar played 265 matches in Eurocups. In which he conceded 83 goals after the 80th minute. If we count after the 85th minute, the Donetsk team have conceded 63 goals since that season. Moreover, starting from the 2014/15 season, 36 goals were conceded after the 80th minute, of which 26 were conceded after the 85th minute. And if we count from the 2008/09 season, during this time 47 goals were conceded after the 80th minute, out of there are 35 of them after the 85th.
As you can see, in the last 10-15 seasons, the Donetsk team began to concede more goals on average per season in decisive minutes than before. Although, of course, this is logically explained by a significant increase in the number of their matches in Eurocups.
It should be noted that Shakhtar have scored 27 goals since the 1991/92 season after the 80th minute. Not so little, but compared to the 83 missed – an abyss.
What’s wrong with Dynamo Kyiv? Since the 1991/92 season, it has played 317 matches in Eurocups and conceded 72 goals after the 80th minute, of which 53 after the 85th minute. Moreover, since the 2014/15 season it has conceded 29 goals after the 80th minute, of which 21 – after the 85th. Since the 2008/09 season, Dynamo have conceded 45 goals after the 80th minute, 34 of them after the 85th. That is, he also had an increase in the number of such missed games on average per season, but the increase in the number of matches also affected this.
At the same time, the Kiev team scored 29 goals after the 80th minute since the 1991/92 season. Again, an abyss compared to the 72 missed.
What about all the other Ukrainian clubs combined? In the European Cups since the 1991/92 season, they have conceded 85 goals after the 80th minute, 61 of them after the 85th minute. Moreover, since the 2014/15 season they have conceded 31 goals after the 80th minute, of which 22 after the 85th minute. Since the 2008/09 season they have conceded 51 goals after the 80th minute, of which 38 after the 85th minute.
Thus, all Ukrainian clubs since the 1991/92 season have conceded 240 goals in Eurocups after the 80th minute. That is, on average for the season, if we count the current one – 7.06. Of these, after the 85th minute – 177 (season average – 5.2). Of these, the current season has already “given” six. Three for Shakhtar, two for Polissya and one for Dynamo.
Moreover, all six took place after the 85th minute. That is, the average number of missed games per season after the 85th has already been exceeded.
From the general statistics, it should be noted that there was a huge percentage of conceded goals after the 85th minute. Between 81-85 minutes, Ukrainian clubs traditionally concede not much. They wait until the very end to disappoint us.
It would be appropriate to compare the statistics of Ukrainian clubs, at least the giants, with others. First of all, I deliberately did not choose the main European giants and, in general, teams from the Top 5 leagues, but teams that were approximately similar in caliber, status, and tournament tasks to Shakhtar and Dynamo. And, in order to save time and worry less about numbers, I counted only from the 2014/15 season.
So, I repeat, since the 2014/15 season, Shakhtar have conceded 36 goals after the 80th minute in European Cups, of which 26 after the 85th minute. Dynamo since the 2014/15 season after the 80th minute – 29 goals, of which 21 – after the 85th. And what about the same PSV? Since the 2014/15 season, he has conceded 21 goals after the 80th minute, 16 of them after the 85th. Including one this season. The Eindhoven team’s compatriots, Ajax, almost caught up with Dynamo – 27 after the 80th minute, 19 of them after the 85th. And also one after the 85th – this season.
Since the 2014/15 season in European competition, Porto have conceded 22 goals after the 80th minute, 16 of them after the 85th. Moreover, two after the 85th – already this season. “Benfica” from the same time – 17 after the 80th minute, of which 11 – after the 85th. And two after the 85th – this season. During the same time, Galatasaray conceded 20 goals after the 80th minute, 14 of them after the 85th. Despite the fact that he didn’t play in the European Cups at all for two seasons. This season he missed three after the 85th minute.
Since the 2014/15 season, Olympiacos has conceded 36 goals in Eurocups after the 80th minute, 25 of them after the 85th minute. In fact, Shakhtar’s performance is worse than Dynamo’s. During this time, Besiktas conceded 29 goals after the 80th minute (like Dynamo), 15 of them after the 85th. Two were conceded this season after the 80th minute, one of them after the 85th.
As for the giants, starting from the 2014/15 season in Eurocups, Manchester City, Bayern, Inter, Arsenal conceded 16 goals after the 80th minute, Manchester United, Atlético Madrid and Juventus – 18 each, Real Madrid – 19, Liverpool – 20, Barcelona – 21. Indicators much lower than those of Shakhtar and Dynamo over this period, but also quite significant, which cannot be ignored.
So, goals in the end are a universal phenomenon, and there is no need to unleash all the dogs on the Ukrainian teams? Still, be that as it may, such missed results and the loss of results because of them are extremely painful. And they repeat it too often with representatives of Ukraine.
