At Stade Brest, people are really looking forward to Tuesday’s Champions League match against Barcelona. The French stunt team can hardly believe that Brest can visit the great Barça. Although there is also some fear.
Brest – with Marco Bizot on target – surprised friend and foe last season by finishing third in Ligue 1, thus qualifying for the Champions League. In the billion dollar ball, things are going remarkably well for the French debutant. After four matches, the count stands at three wins and a draw. That is good for fourth place, virtually a direct ticket to the eighth finals.
A visit to Barcelona follows on Tuesday. “How could you ever predict two years ago that you would play in Barcelona?” Brest coach Éric Roy wondered at the press conference. ‘It’s just unbelievable. This is a dream that no one expected would ever come true. It’s fantastic to be able to play against these kinds of clubs.’
Yet there is also some fear in Roy. He knows how good Barcelona can be under Hansi Flick. ‘Of course we expect a huge challenge. There have been certain Barcelona games this season – against Bayern Munich (4-1, ed.) and Real Madrid (0-4, ed.) – that it is better not to watch. Then we would have stayed in Brest, I think.’
But at least Brest is not going to dig in. ‘We want to show something here, put on a show. The only question is whether Barcelona allows that. But Barcelona fans, come to this match because I hope it will be a spectacle.’ The match between Barcelona and Stade Brest starts on Tuesday at 9 p.m.
