A photo of Sifan Hassan’s decisive overtake during this year’s Olympic marathon is in the running to be chosen as world athletics photo of the year.
The image was captured by British photographer Michael Steele. The photo shows that Hassan passes the Ethiopian Tigst Assefa in the last bend. That didn’t happen without a fight, because the Dutch woman had to use her arms. Shortly after this moment she crossed the finish line first.
Other nominees
The other nominated photos were also taken during the Games in Paris. One of them shows Mondo Duplantis breaking the world record for pole vaulting.
The other picture shows a delirious Noah Lyles with his gold medal that the American managed to win in the men’s 100 meters. These photos were taken by Mattia Ozbot and Anna Szilagyi respectively.
Hassan wrote history in Paris by winning the Olympic marathon. It was her third medal after bronze medals in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. It was the first time that a woman finished on the podium three times in these events.
The winner of the World Athletics Photo of the Year will be announced at the 2024 World Athletics Awards on December 1 in Monaco.
