The classic Ajax logo will return from next season. After 34 years, the old emblem of the Amsterdammers is being restored.
The club announced this on the day of the gala match between Ajax Legends and Real Madrid. This happened with a video on social media, in which it is stated that Ajax has not really been Ajax lately. ‘Say that you have changed, that you don’t live up to your name, that it seems as if you have lost your face.’
However, Ajax is doing everything it can to remain true to the club’s DNA, general manager Menno Geelen said on the club website on Sunday morning. ‘Bringing back the classic logo symbolizes this aim and is at the same time both a tribute to our rich past and a source of inspiration for the future.’
The fact that Ajax is now restoring the old logo cannot be seen separately from the club’s 125th anniversary on March 18. “We know that a majority of our fans have cherished this wish for years and we thought our 125th anniversary was a perfect moment to gift those fans and ourselves the return of the classic logo,” said Geelen.
Ajax played with the classic logo until 1991, but then opted for a more modern version. From next season, the original logo, which was in use from 1928, will gradually return to the club’s communications. On Sunday afternoon, around the match between Ajax Legends and Real Madrid Legends (3.30 p.m.), the return of the logo will be celebrated.
