Transfer ban and possible relegation for Lyon, which has half a billion in debt

Olympique Lyonnais is not allowed to buy players this coming winter due to major financial problems. In addition, the club is conditionally relegated. If the situation does not improve this season, relegation to Ligue 2 is a fact.

Lyon recently reported that it has a debt of 505.1 million. The club currently occupies fifth place in Ligue 1.

More punishments

Other French clubs also face penalties from the French league. Le Havre (Ligue 1) and FC Martigues (Ligue 2) also receive a transfer ban. Martigues, like Lyon, has also received a conditional relegation.

Lyon is one of the most successful French clubs. Seven consecutive league titles were won between 2002 and 2008.

Memphis Depay played at Lyon from 2017 to 2021, while coach Peter Bosz worked there in 2021 and 2022.
