Sinner and Fritz qualify for the ATP Finals after victories over Ruud and Zverev

Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz will play the final on Sunday to win the ATP Finals in Turin. Sinner defeated Casper Ruud in his semi-final in two sets: 6-1, 6-2. Fritz was too strong for Alexander Zverev in three sets in the semi-final with 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (3).

Sinner, last year’s losing finalist, had not yet lost a set in his three matches with Ruud, who reached the final a year earlier. The Italian number one in the world hardly got into trouble this time either.

In the first set, Sinner quickly took a 3-0 lead. Ruud pushed for a while in the fifth game, but could not prevent Sinner from easily winning the first set. The Italian only needed half an hour.

Ruud offered a better match in the second set, although the Norwegian number seven in the world could never match Sinner’s level. Sinner served out the match at love.

Fritz had already gained access to the final earlier in the day in a match that was extremely exciting until the end. The score in head-to-head matches was narrowly in favor of Fritz (6 to 5), who defeated Zverev at both the US Open and Wimbledon this year.

Just like then, the differences were small this time and there was little difference between the two. The first set went Fritz’s way, after which Zverev stepped up his game in the second set.

In the deciding set, Zverev missed five breaking opportunities and Fritz missed three. So a tiebreak had to decide. The American, semi-finalist in 2022, punished two mistakes by two-time tournament winner Zverev.

The final will be played on Sunday at 6 p.m. In the group stage, Sinner won in two sets against Fritz (6-4, 6-4).
