Claudio Ranieri wants to give Mats Hummels a chance. The German central defender has had a disappointing start to his period at AS Roma, but the new coach of the Romans has not yet given up hope.
Ranieri assured the press that he at least wants to try with the 35-year-old Hummels. ‘I saw some games, the final against Real Madrid and the one against Paris Saint-Germain, where he scored. I don’t know why this kid wouldn’t play. Yes, he’s a certain age, but I’d like to see it. I choose the players who win matches.’
It will be a relief for the German, who has already been linked with a rapid departure from Rome. Last season he reached the final of the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund. After being without a club for a long time this summer, Hummels signed with Roma in September.
His start there would not have been what he expected. The defender with a considerable track record was completely ignored by trainer Daniele De Rossi. After the departure of the club icon, Ivan Juric also did not really like it. As a result, he only made his debut at the end of October, in which he scored a goal. Within four minutes the match against Fiorentina was scored. Only that was for the wrong purpose.
