PAOK 1-3: Huge double by Dikefalos who remains alone at the top, first red and white defeat this year

One team now remains undefeated in the Women’s Volley League after six matches and that is PAOK. The Big Head of the North not only beat “Melina Merkouri” with a double, but got a “clean” victory against Olympiakos with 3-1.

In fact, this was the first defeat of Olympiakos not only in the league, but in the whole season in its 10th match.

The offensive polyphony of the “black and white” was what finally gave them the three points, since they had five players with double-digit points, led by Baka with 18, while among the “red and white” Koumboura was hopelessly alone with 33 points.

In the 7th matchday, Olympiacos is hosted by AO Thiras in Santorini, while PAOK welcomes the Amazons.

The match

As expected before the start of the match, the match was a good morning derby. The two teams in the first set were deadlocked, with both going on short runs of four and five points.

PAOK took the early lead, making it 4-2, 4-6, but Olympiacos leveled the game and regained the lead again with 12-10, thanks to the amazing Koumboura.

The “black and white” punished the home team’s mistakes and went ahead with 18-15, but the “red and white” equalized at 18-18.

In the final stretch of the first set, the Northern Bicephalus was cooler, making it 22-20 with Jasper’s ace, which marked Artakianou and closed it in the best way, winning it 25-23.

In the second set, PAOK led until 10-8, halfway through the set the teams were tied (14-14), but a series of points by Olympiakos put an end to the hopes of the “black and white” for 0-2, with Piraeus club to level the game 25-16.

And the third set, like the remaining two, developed into a contest between the two Serbian players. From the “red and white” side, Koumboura continued to have the scoring bucket, while Drpa from the Thessaloniki team.

Olympiacos and PAOK went hand-in-hand throughout the set, but at the pivotal point (21-21) the guests celebrated their second set victory with a 4-0.

In the fourth set the Northern Bicephalus was again better at points, Koumbura was hopelessly alone and Baka who raised her performance gave the set (25-23) and the 3-1 victory to her team.

Aris despite the problems they are facing (played without Kulerkan, Aplada) appeared improved, but Santorini hit the gas after 2-1 and won 2-3 for their fifth consecutive win.

Santorini started better in the first set and with pressure on the service and solutions in the defense took the lead with 4-9 and 7-13. Aris fought back and cut it to 11-14 thanks to Abbott’s serve, which forced Matteo Freschi to call a timeout.

From that point on, however, the guests dominated, leading 11-18 and closing the set 25-15.

Aris started better in the second set and took a 6-3 lead. At that point, Santorini also responded with a 2-7 lead and led 8-10 thanks to Dimitriadis’ first goal.

Aris went ahead again at 15-13 again thanks to Abbott’s serve. The two teams continued with a difference of two points until 20-18. There Abbott gave Aris a three-point lead (21-18) to take the first bowl set at 24-21. An out by Abbott and an ace by Moser made it 24-23 but Lukic’s block gave her team the set (25-23).

In the third set, the team from Santorini took a 2-6 lead very quickly, but with two aces from Kalapoda, Aris reduced it to 7-8.

But Santorini quickly launched its own counterattack and took the lead with 8-12 and 12-17. Aris reacted and reduced it to 17-18 with Lukic and tied it at 20-20 with Abbott’s counter ball. The two teams from then on put on a terrific show, until 31-31. Simone Abbott spoke there and gave the set to Aris with 33-31.

In the fourth set Santorini had no trouble equalizing as an early 5-4 lead quickly turned into 5-12 and 7-16, to close out the set 17-25.

Finally, the initial 5-5 tiebreak became 5-10, with Aris reducing to 8-11. Santorini, however, once again found the reception of Aris and took the victory with 9-15.
