Kosovo leaves the field in Bucharest due to chanting about Serbia

Kosovo’s players left the field in injury time of the Nations League match against Romania on Friday evening. This happened at a 0-0 score after provocative “Serbia, Serbia” was chanted in the stadium in Bucharest. The match was then abandoned because Kosovo’s players refused to return.

The Kosovars first complained to the referee and then decided to leave for the changing rooms. This is not the first time, last year an away match against Kosovo in Romania was also stopped due to provocative singing and the display of flags with, among other things, the text “Kosovo belongs to Serbia”.

Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia in 2008, but not every country recognizes this. So is Romania. UEFA does recognize Kosovo as an independent country and is therefore allowed to play in the Nations League.

Kosovo had to beat leader Romania to maintain first place in the group and promotion to the B division. It is not yet clear what will happen to the final result of this match.
